Asbestos Discovery Halts Michaela Howie Playground Upgrade in Dee Why

Asbestos was found at Dee Why’s Michaela Howie Playground during renovation works, leading to a short-term closure and safety clean-up.

Dee Why Playground Shut After Asbestos Found Mid-Renovation

A significant upgrade to Michaela Howie Playground near Dee Why Beach has hit a troubling delay after asbestos was discovered on-site. The popular playground, which has been undergoing renovations since February 2025, has been closed off while the hazardous material is safely removed.

The Northern Beaches Council is leading the project, which features new play equipment, synthetic soft-fall surfacing, better fencing, accessible pathways, and more seating with shade. However, progress was briefly disrupted in late March when bonded asbestos was found during excavation for a retaining wall.

Construction and Safety Measures

Council confirmed the material was non-friable, meaning it posed a lower risk as the fibres were contained and not easily airborne. The area was quickly secured with fencing and signage, and a licensed asbestos removal contractor was brought in to handle the clean-up following SafeWork NSW guidelines.

Remediation work was carried out over two days, and nearby residents were notified in advance.

Community Input Shapes Playground Design

In 2023, the Council sought community feedback for the playground upgrade, receiving over 50 responses. Locals wanted more engaging play equipment and extra seating. While some pushed for a larger overhaul, the final design was limited by space, height restrictions, and budget.

The playground is dedicated to the memory of Michaela Howie, a local toddler who died in a car crash with her parents in 2004. A commemorative plaque remains a key feature in the new layout, ensuring the space remains connected to the community’s history.

Alternative Play Areas During Closure

During the ongoing works, the playground remains closed to the public. Parents and carers are encouraged to visit nearby parks such as James Meehan Reserve, Walter Gors Park, and The Crescent Reserve.

Despite the asbestos incident, Council expects the Dee Why playground to reopen as planned by May 2025, barring weather delays. All safety and environmental regulations are being followed to ensure the site is safe for children and families once completed.

Conrad Sewell Brings Firestone 10th Anniversary Tour to Dee Why in Acoustic Celebration

Dee Why will get a front-row seat to one of Australia’s most recognisable voices as Conrad Sewell brings his 10th anniversary Firestone tour to town in an intimate, acoustic show.

The Brisbane-born singer-songwriter will perform at Dee Why RSL on Saturday, 12 April, as part of a national tour celebrating a decade since his global hit Firestone with Kygo first took off.

The tour begins 4 April in Coffs Harbour and continues through regional towns and coastal centres, wrapping up in Kings Beach on 31 May.

A National Tour with Local Heart

Sewell’s upcoming regional tour is being billed as his biggest yet, not in scale but in connection. The acoustic shows will strip back the production and focus on the songwriting and stories behind his most popular songs. For fans in Dee Why and beyond, it’s a rare chance to experience his music in a more personal setting.

He said touring regional Australia has always held a special place in his heart, offering the chance to explore the country while performing for long-time supporters. He’s also using the tour to test out new music ahead of future releases, aiming to see how it lands with live audiences.

Joining him on the road will be René Le Feuvre, an emerging talent also based in Queensland, who is set to open each night across the tour.

A Decade Since Firestone

Originally released in 2014, Firestone shot Sewell into international recognition after teaming up with Norwegian DJ Kygo. The track has since clocked over 1 billion streams on Spotify, making it one of the most enduring electronic pop songs of the decade.

But Sewell’s career runs deeper than that one hit. He won an ARIA Award for Song of the Year with Start Again in 2015, and that same year, he and his sister Grace became the first Australian-born siblings to separately top the ARIA charts. In 2018, his single Healing Hands went triple platinum and also earned a nomination for Song of the Year.

In 2019, he released his debut album LIFE to strong reviews, reinforcing his place in Australia’s music landscape.

Back to the Roots

Sewell said many of his songs were written in quiet, acoustic moments—on a piano or guitar—and he wants the tour to reflect that. While his music has reached massive streaming numbers and global audiences, the aim of this tour is to return to the raw emotion and storytelling where it all started.

Dee Why RSL Club Plans $10.7-Million Upgrade

Dee Why RSL Club, a popular northern beaches venue, will undergo a $10.7 million refurbishment to expand its facilities and better serve its 77,000 members and the local community.

Expansion and Dining Improvements

The club’s management has submitted plans to the Northern Beaches Council outlining significant alterations and additions to the existing building. These plans include constructing a new 140-seat Asian-style restaurant to meet the growing demand for diverse dining options.

The project also aims to increase the club’s overall floor space from 15,208 square metres to 15,827 square metres, with the majority of this expansion occurring on level two.

Gaming Area and Internal Changes

A key focus of the refurbishment is the reconfiguration of the gaming area. The club intends to increase the spacing between poker machines, responding to member feedback regarding social distancing preferences following the COVID-19 pandemic. It was stated that the number of machines would not increase.

Further internal modifications include relocating the cafe, expanding the bistro, and enclosing an existing outdoor area on level two, adding to the usable space. A new communications room will also be built.

External Facade and Entrance Changes

The exterior of the Dee Why RSL Club is set for a significant transformation. The plans detail a facade upgrade featuring decorative screening and wall cladding, intended to create an architectural statement at the northern end of Dee Why Town Centre.

The Pittwater Road entrance will be relocated to a more central position, closer to a bus stop, improving accessibility for members and visitors. New awnings, stairs, ramps, a roof, and a skylight are included in the external works, alongside new plantings.

Rationale for the Upgrades

The club’s management has stated that the upgrades are necessary to address the increasing demand from its large membership base and the general public. They aim to improve operational efficiency and ensure the club remains a vital community hub.

The development would allow for better economic use of the land. The club’s representatives have clarified that a previously proposed childcare centre is no longer part of the development plans, with the focus now solely on enhancing the club’s existing facilities.

Truck Torched in Alleged Insurance Scam in Dee Why

A man has admitted to deliberately setting fire to a truck in the car park of a club in Dee Why as part of an alleged $50,000 insurance fraud scheme.

Background and Context

A 21-year-old man, Bailey Chapman, has pleaded guilty to intentionally setting fire to a tipper truck in the car park of Dee Why Bowling Club. The fire occurred on the night of 2 April 2023. The truck, a Mitsubishi Fuso Canter, was jointly owned by a couple and used for a rubbish collection business operating on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Following the incident, police launched an investigation which included the release of CCTV footage in September 2024. The footage showed a man, later identified as Mr Chapman, fleeing the scene shortly after the vehicle caught fire.

Insurance Fraud Allegation

According to court documents presented at Manly Local Court, Mr Chapman set the fire after reaching an agreement with one of the truck’s owners, a 38-year-old woman. Police allege the motive was financial gain. The woman lodged an insurance claim for $48,830 the day after the incident. No payout has been issued.

Mr Chapman, now in custody and residing in Mortons Creek, has admitted to the charge of intentionally damaging property by fire. He is scheduled to be sentenced on 23 April.

Events Leading to the Fire

On the day of the incident, Mr Chapman spent over five hours at Dee Why Bowling Club with the truck’s owners. After leaving the club, police allege he retrieved a jerry can from the owners’ garage and filled it with petrol at a nearby Shell service station at 8:39 p.m. Surveillance footage shows him wearing a face covering during the purchase.

At 8:45 p.m., he was dropped off near the bowling club. Phone records indicate he made calls to a mobile phone linked to the female owner before and after the fire. At 9:52 p.m., CCTV captured Mr Chapman igniting an object and throwing it under the vehicle, which immediately caught alight. He then ran south along Fisher Road North.

Additional Legal Proceedings

The female co-owner of the truck has been charged with dishonesty for gain and damage to property by fire. Her matter remains before the courts. The male co-owner is not facing any charges.

Police confirmed both arrests were made following a public appeal in September 2024, which included the release of CCTV footage.

The case remains ongoing with Mr Chapman awaiting sentencing and the female owner’s matter yet to be finalised. Investigations by NSW Police continue as the court process unfolds.

Dee Why Divided Over Plans for Outdoor Gym at James Meehan Reserve

A planned outdoor gym at James Meehan Reserve in Dee Why has divided locals, with some supporting the free fitness facility while others fear it could overcrowd the area.

Fitness Plan Sparks Community Debate

A plan to install outdoor exercise equipment in James Meehan Reserve in Dee Why has been met with both support and criticism from residents. Some are favourable towards the free gym equipment, while others are concerned about overcrowding and the loss of green areas.

The Northern Beaches Council wants to establish a fitness hub to promote outdoor exercise, utilizing money from developer contributions.

Proposed Equipment and Locations

The plan includes calisthenic and strength training stations, such as parallel bars, roman rings, sit-up benches, and gorilla bars.

Two locations within James Meehan Reserve are under consideration: one near the existing playground, and another behind the carpark. The Council says the design considers accessibility and minimal visual impact.

Support and Concerns from Residents

Some locals welcome the project, citing that it will encourage community health and be a free option compared to gyms.

Others state that James Meehan Reserve is already utilized extensively by sporting teams, families, and casual users, and the introduction of fitness equipment would lead to overcrowding and safety concerns.

Community Consultation and Next Steps

The period for the community consultation of the Council expired on March 16, 2025, when feedback was obtained through its “Have Your Say” portal. The next thing is to study public feedback before a decision can be made.

If approved, construction will begin in winter 2025 and be completed in spring 2025. Will this new gym add to Dee Why’s outdoor lifestyle, or will it pose more problems for an already congested public area?

Surfing World Mourns Dee Why Surf Legend Shane Herring

Shane Herring, the Dee Why surfer who once defeated Kelly Slater at the peak of his career in the Coke Classic finals in Sydney in 1992, has died at home, leaving the Australian surfing community in mourning.

The local Dee Why community and the wider surfing world are remembering Shane Herring, a man whose talent shone brightly but briefly. Herring, aged 53, passed away in his West Tweed apartment after a fall down stairs in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Reports indicate he suffered a head injury, ate something from his fridge, and then went to sleep, never to wake up. Herring was a figure of immense talent, known for his explosive surfing style and influence on modern surfboard design.

Early Career and Rise to Fame

Born and raised in the heart of Dee Why, Herring began surfing at a young age, quickly developing a reputation for his exceptional skill. By the early 1990s, he had become a leading figure in the “banana board” movement, riding highly rockered surfboards with deep concaves designed by Greg Webber.

His unique style, characterised by powerful turns and high-speed manoeuvres, set him apart from his peers. In 1992, Herring achieved his most famous victory, defeating Kelly Slater in the final of the Coke Classic at Narrabeen. This win propelled him to the top of surfing, with many predicting a long and successful career.

Challenges and Decline

Despite his early success, Herring’s career was short-lived. He struggled with the pressures of fame and the professional surfing lifestyle, and his form began to decline. He faced challenges with the big waves of Pipeline in Hawaii, which hindered his chances of a world title. By 1994, he had retired from the World Championship Tour.

Off the waves, Herring battled with alcohol and drug addiction for many years, leading to a period of isolation and health problems. He struggled with the transition from surfing success to a regular life. Friends and fellow surfers noted he struggled to cope with the spotlight.

Legacy and Remembrance

Despite his challenges, Herring’s impact on surfing remains significant. His innovative surfing style and influence on surfboard design have left a lasting mark on the sport. Kelly Slater, among others, acknowledged Herring’s talent and his contribution to surfing.

In recent years, Herring has been working on a new line of surfboards with shaper Jimmy Young-Whitforde, collaborating with Greg Webber, and aiming to produce custom designs. Friends described Herring as a “classic little leprechaun” with a kind and gentle nature. His legacy is remembered by those who saw him surf at Dee Why Point and those who saw him ride the waves with a connection to the water itself.

Herring’s passing is a sad loss to the Dee Why community and the wider surfing world.

Police responded to reports of a possible armed robbery just before 8:00 p.m. at a store on The Strand on 6 February.

The group then stole several items before running away, and headed north towards Dee Why Lagoon.

Dee Why Convenience Store CCTV Footage Helps Identify Suspects

Officers from the Northern Beaches Police Area Command arrived quickly and spoke with the store employee. After reviewing CCTV footage, they recognised some of the youths as individuals known to them. With this information, police and the Dog Unit focused their search on the Collaroy area.

Around 45 minutes later, officers spotted three boys walking along Pittwater Road near the shops. Two of them, aged 16 and 13, were taken into custody and transported to Manly Police Station for questioning.

Teenager Rushed to Hospital After Suspected Blue-Ringed Octopus Bite at Dee Why Beach

A 13-year-old girl was rushed to Northern Beaches Hospital on Monday after a suspected blue-ringed octopus bite at Dee Why Beach.

This marks the second such incident in recent months, raising concerns about the presence of these venomous creatures in the area.

The incident occurred shortly after 1:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 January, while the girl explored rock pools at the southern end of Dee Why Beach. After experiencing a sharp pain in her foot, she alerted lifeguards, who observed a welt on her ankle and noted her increasing nausea.

Suspecting a blue-ringed octopus bite, the lifeguards immobilised her and called for an ambulance.

NSW Ambulance paramedics, including an intensive care team, arrived quickly and treated the girl. Although she did not display life-threatening symptoms,  paramedics decided to transport her to Northern Beaches Hospital as a precaution.

This incident follows a similar occurrence on 27 October 2024, when a 34-year-old woman was also hospitalised after a suspected blue-ringed octopus bite at the same location.
