The issues, which include cancelled trips, overcrowded buses, and so called “ghost buses”, have been linked to driver shortages affecting the Keolis Downer Northern Beaches network. For people travelling between Dee Why, the city, Chatswood, Manly and surrounding suburbs, the disruptions have made journey planning more difficult.

Wakehurst independent MP Michael Regan said his office continued to receive feedback from residents about bus reliability across the Northern Beaches. He said concerns were being raised across a range of routes, including key commuter and school services connecting the Northern Beaches with the city, Chatswood, Manly, Dee Why and the Forest area.

According to Mr Regan, residents have reported issues on routes including the 270, 271, 179, 181X and 154X, while passengers from Allambie Heights have also raised ongoing concerns about the 174X. He said the pattern of reliability issues had shifted over time, with different routes experiencing problems at different stages.

Driver shortages have been identified as one of the factors affecting bus service reliability across parts of Sydney’s network in recent years. Cancelled trips can result in longer waits and increased crowding on later services, particularly on routes with limited alternatives.

Reports of “ghost buses” have also raised concerns about the reliability of real time travel information. In these cases, services appear on tracking apps before disappearing or failing to arrive, making it difficult for passengers to decide whether to continue waiting or seek alternative transport.

For Dee Why, reliable bus services play an important role in connecting residents with employment, education, healthcare and other destinations across Sydney. As one of the Northern Beaches’ main transport interchanges, the suburb serves commuters travelling in multiple directions throughout the day.

Transport for NSW and Keolis Downer have previously acknowledged the challenges created by driver shortages and have introduced recruitment initiatives and timetable changes aimed at improving service reliability. Despite those efforts, concerns continue to be raised about the consistency of services on parts of the Northern Beaches network.

Improving service reliability and the accuracy of real time information remains an ongoing issue for commuters who rely on buses for their daily travel.
